Daniel Landau is the Founder and Executive Director of Mens Helpline, a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting men seeking emotional support after losing a child due to a miscarriage, still birth, and infertility. Following a successful career as the head of various organizations’ fundraising, sales, and business development departments, Daniel and his wife experienced the emotional trauma of losing a child due to a miscarriage. After realizing there were many resources available for women experiencing infant loss, but very few available for men, Daniel shifted the course of his career - and life - and started the Mens Helpline organization. In addition to working full-time at Mens Helpline, Daniel is also a Board member for the Familial Dysautonomia Foundation and the host of the Men Talk Podcast. He holds a Bachelor’s degree from Queens College in Political Science and a Master’s degree in Non Profit Management and Leadership from The Hebrew University of Jerusalem.
Daniel joins me today to share his story of losing a child due to a miscarriage and the challenges he faced to find emotional support. We discuss how the concept of Mens Helpline began and why traditional support groups aimed to help women through the trauma of losing a child are not always as effective for men. We discuss how Mens Helpline offers a unique way for men to gain support from other men suffering from the grief of losing a child and why its critical for men to share their emotions and be open to communicating their feelings with their spouse. We also discuss the five stages of grief, strategies men can use to cope with grief, and how the grieving process can help you become a stronger, more empathetic spouse.
“Grief does open up opportunities at the end of the day. You never know why it happens, but - at the end of the day - when it does happen, and you accept it, it makes you stronger.” - Daniel Landau
